Difference Between Indica, Sativa & Hybrid Marijuana

Indica, Sativa & Hybrid Marijuana
Indica, Sativa & Hybrid Marijuana

For many centuries, Indica and sativa marijuana strains have been the primary types of strains that have been used for recreational and medicinal purposes. As cloning gels and rooting gels become popular, the possibility to create a new breed of marijuana become possible. Although there are in total of 4 known types of marijuana types in the world, only 3 of them possesses the psychoactive ingredients; THC and CBD that tends to make a person feel “intoxicated”. The fourth kind, is known as the Cannabis Ruderalis. Although it is a marijuana strain plant, the level of THC and CBD is less, to almost zero and can be very hard to spot, since they only grow about 2 feet tall.

In fact, Cannabis Ruderalis is a strain that not a lot of people are aware of, and it is heavily used for medical practices and as breeding-hosts to cross-breed other types of marijuana strains under cooler climates. Apart from Cannabis Ruderalis, in this review, we will be discussing the major differences between Indica, sativa, and the hybrid strains.

What is Sativa?

Sativa strain marijuana plants are easily distinguished. The leaves are longer and thinner. The plant, including its flowering, (also known as buds) are brighter and richer green coloration. Sativa plants have a higher ratio of THC then over CBD, but is not limited to CBD and contains a combination of both. Since the level of THC is high in sativa plants, the effect and symptoms can vary from person to person. The intoxication gives a high-level of “buzz”, and sativa marijuana users tend to enjoy this “energized-type-of-high”.

What is Indica?

Indica strain marijuana plants are also easily to distinguish and identify. The leaves are shorter but wider and denser. The plant, including its flowers / buds, are darker in coloration, resembling a dark green tint. Indica plants usually have a lower amount of THC and a higher amount of CBD, but still tends to give a psychoactive effect. Indica users usually experience a “lazier-type-of-high”, and can make an individual feel sleepy.

Hybrid – Hybrid marijuana plants have been observed as experimental phases administered from man-made procedures for cross-breeding existing breeds to form new hybrid plants. It is essentially important for individuals / users to consider the ratio factor of THC and CBD. These two are the main ingredients in the psychoactive ingredients, along side with terpenes. Terpenes is also found in sativa and Indica plants, but to understand the molecular structure of a hybrid-plant, taking terpene structures under consideration is ideal in order to determine the possible symptoms and side-effects.

What are Terpenes Exactly?

Terpenes are the sets of simple organic molecules present in all living organisms; in this case it is the molecular compounds associated in marijuana.

Terpenes are responsible to create the aromas and flavors in the cannabis plant. Terpenes are made of carbon and hydrogen atoms and are generated the cannabis plant itself, usually taking maturity level during the vegetation stage (growth phase in cannabis)

Terpenes are also the principle ingredient in plant resin or the essential oils produced in a plant. Terpenes act as the building-blocks in cannabis plants and other similar plants that share the same terpene types.

What Terpenes Consists of?

While scientists are uncovering new anomalies about Terpenes, the following are the ingredients found in Terpenes so far;

Bisabolol– With notes of chamomile and tea tree oil, the terpene bisabolol is thought to reduce inflammation and irritation. It may also have microbial and pain-reducing effects.

Caryophyllene – The peppery, spicy molecule may reduce anxiety, ease symptoms of depression, and improve ulcers.

Linalool – Linalool is said to help improve relaxation and boost mood with its floral notes.

Myrcene – The most common terpene, this earthy, herbal molecule may help reduce anxiety and insomnia so you can sleep better.

Ocimene – This terpene produces notes of basil, mango, and parsley. Its primary effects may include easing congestion and warding off viruses and bacteria.

Pinene – As the name suggests, this terpene produces an intense pine aroma. It may help boost memory, reduce pain, and ease some of the not-so-pleasant symptoms of THC, such as nausea and coordination problems.

Terpinolene– Cannabis with this compound may smell like apples, cumin, and conifers. It may have sedative, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.

Limonene – Bright, zippy citrus notes come from this terpene. It’s said to improve mood and reduce stress.

Humulene– This terpene is deeply earthy and woody, like hops or cloves. Cannabis strains with this molecule may reduce inflammation.

Eucalyptol – With notes of eucalyptus and tea tree oil, this molecule is refreshing and invigorating. It may also reduce inflammation and fight bacteria.

Where Do Hybrids Come From?

As a conclusion, hybrid marijuana strains are usually created from cross-breeds of two existing breeds, for example, the possibilities are as follows:

Original Strain TypeCrossing BreedCategoryFinal Result
Haze (Indica / Sativa)OG Kush (mainly Sativa)MixHybrid Breed
Purple Kush (Indica / Sativa)White Widow (mainly Sativa)MixHybrid Bred

As this example should help you understand the significance of the different types of combination can be used to cross-breed different types of marijuana breeds to get a stronger and more potent type of breed.

Therefore, although a natural hybrid occurrence is possible, (natural hybrids undiscovered till this day) most hybrids are created in a marijuana grow lab, while strains of sativa and Indica are grown naturally and home-grown by many. The method in which creates a hybrid alone, provides the scientific community with infinite possibilities to create unique cannabis plants and can even engineer them accordingly to get a specific type of strain.

This alone shed light into the medical spectrum when dealing with marijuana and how it can be used for medical usage purposes. To learn more about marijuana strains, please visit the website today and don’t forget to sign up to receive weekly empowering insights about marijuana!
